Social Security disability

Persons who are disabled because they live with a serious mental illness are eligible to receive a monthly cash payment through Social Security or Supplemental Security Income disability programs administered by the Social Security Administration in the federal government. When an individual receives Social Security disability, they may be eligible for other state-sponsored mental health programs. Individuals apply for benefits through the Social Security office. Determination of disability is based on clinical evidence and examinations. Individuals who receive Social Security disability benefits have the option of returning to work with a reduction of benefits or discontinuation of benefits.
