First episode psychosis programs
First episode programs for people who have had one psychotic episode are available in some states. The goal is early treatment, intended to reduce the long-term negative effects resulting from repeated episodes. These programs have a multidisciplinary approach, provide intensive early intervention, help clients and their families navigate the complex mental health care system, and provide education and support for people who live with a mental illness and their family members. Research evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of early intervention for promoting recovery and reducing the long-term negative consequences of repeated psychotic episodes.
