Crisis intervention training for police officers
People with mental illness may encounter law enforcement due to their symptoms and public behavior or in response to reports from others who are concerned about the individual’s safety. Crisis intervention training (CIT) for police officers combines the expertise of law enforcement, mental health providers, and hospital emergency staff to respond to persons in crisis. Police officers receive training, including de-escalation skills. CIT programs reduce arrests of people with mental illness and help them get needed treatment.
